Lilting is the art of performing traditional dance tunes, not by ear, but by mouth! Tunes are sung using a variety of syllables, and sometimes nonsensical or comical lyrics. In the old days, a lilter would provide music whenever people wanted a kitchen dance but there was no fiddler or other musician present. Nowadays, people lilt mainly to amuse themselves and others.

In this workshop, Steve will play you a few recorded examples of different lilting traditions to explore the technical aspects of lilting, and then you will get down to doing it, as a group and (for the less inhibited) solo. The emphasis will be on fun and enjoyment!

Where: Royal Canadian Legion

5455 de Maisonneuve Blvd West

Corner Addington Street, in Montreal, a 5 minute walk from Vendôme metro.
