Before WW11 inspection of Black Watch regiments required having the troops step on a mirror. One was not considered a good soldier if he choose to wear something under the kilt.

An officer found in violation of the rule had to pay for a bottle of port. Through the years since WW11 the rule has changed somewhat. Now under-the-kilt dress is optional. Nonetheless, most highland kilted soldiers believe in tradition and go “regimental.”
