CBC Indie Music Festival Attracts Top BBC Personality: Mary Ann Kennedy
Special Canadian Broadcasting Tour: May 27th – June 5th
Broadcaster, author, producer and award-winning musician Mary Ann Kennedy will be in Canada from 27 May – 5 June!
Mary Ann Kennedy is one of the most well-loved and well-known voices and personalities on BBC Radio 3 at both a national and regional level, fronting major series and specials on world and traditional Scottish and Irish music.
Mary Ann will be travelling to several Canadian cities and territories including Toronto, Halifax and Prince Edward Island, with fellow BBC Radio 3 presenter, Hannah French. They will be recording a special series of programs to celebrate Canada Day on 1st July for BBC Radio 3 broadcasts. These recording sessions will reflect the breadth and vitality of the wonderfully diverse world of Canada’s music and will also feature specially-commissioned collaborations between musicians from Canada and the UK.
The programs will include a composition by Canadian sound artist Amanda Christie incorporating performances of the unique tradition of Gaelic Presbyterian psalm-singing which formed part of Mary Ann’s own upbringing. Mary Ann is also looking forward to CBC’s Indie Music Festival held at Echo Beach, Toronto, on 27/28 May where she will be in attendance.
As well as having a most recognisable and soothing broadcasting voice, Mary Ann Kennedy, aka Màiri Anna NicUalraig, also has a beautiful singing voice that we will be hearing a lot more of soon! Mary Ann will be releasing her debut solo album ‘An Dàn’ in Canada and worldwide through ARC Music/Watercolour Music in July 2017. ‘An Dàn’ – Gaelic for ‘The Song’ –  has some deeply personal stories throughout the album, each track carves a unique path with full liner notes detailed in Gaelic and English. As Mary Ann says in her own words:
“There are songs of love and loss, nature and nurture, war and peace, spiritual and temporal, place and people… refracted through the facets of the linguistic prism that gives the Gaelic language and soul its particular outlook on the world… this is an album of present and future: this is my own ‘heart’s music’.”
Mary Ann Kennedy is a Glasgow Gael living in Lochaber where she and her husband, Nick Turner, run Watercolour Music Studios in the idyllic West Highlands. Mary Ann’s own musical career is both extensive and award-winning as producer, writer and teacher. Mary Ann has received several major awards including the Concours International de l’Harpe Celtique and both National Mod Gold Medals. Mary Ann’s band, Cliar, named after the Gaelic word for ‘itinerant musicians’, won the all-time Best Album accolade at the inaugural Scots Trad Music Awards, and earned her a Saltire Award.  For Mary Ann interviews/WAVs or mp3s of ‘An Dàn’ please e-mail: angie@arcmusic.co.uk
