January 17, 2012

CHARLOTTETOWN — A federal cabinet minister from Prince Edward Island says her government needs to do a better job getting EI payments into the hands of Islanders.

Topics : Human Resources , Atlantic Canada Gail Shea, the minister of national revenue, says calls flooded into her constituency offices in December from Islanders frustrated with long waits for their employment insurance.

The Island MP says several hundred calls came in late last year, and some were complaining of wait times of over two months.

Shea says she hopes Human Resources and Skills Development Minister Diane Finley will review what occurred and ensure that better service is provided.

The federal government has said it has increased resources to clear away the backlog in employment insurance claims.

A spokesman for Finley said more than 100 full time and part-time positions have been added to deal with the claims from Atlantic Canada.
