Plans to Pay Tribute to VC Hero (2003)
Private Jimmy Stokes, who was born in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, won the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honor for bravery, when he single-handedly captured 17 German soldiers in the Second World War, even though he had been wounded eight times. Now the local people in the Gorbals are joining with a local arts project to create a memorial to Private Stokes. Described as the “soldier who would never give up”, Stokes refused to go to a first-aid post after capturing the Germans and led another charge under heavy fire. But this time he was fatally wounded and was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
