Robert Burns was a Farmer, Tax collector, Folk Hero, and a Poet.  He was born on January 25, 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland and died on July 21, 1796 in Dumfries, Scotland.

Known as the Ploughman Poet –  Scotland’s favorite son – Rabbie Burns and Poet of the People just to mention a few of his nicknames.

Robert Burns the National poet of Scotland wrote lyrics and songs in the Scottish dialect.  He was born the eldest of seven children to William Burnes and Agnes Broun.   They were exposed to hard times and poverty but they were a close knit family.

Wiliam Burnes believed education was of the utmost importance.  His wife, Agnes could not read but she knew many songs which she sang often to her children.

William died in 1784 and is buried I the churchyard of Kirk Alloway.

Robert was his rebellion against orthodox religion and morality and the many women in his life but he married only one, Jean Armour.
