The Falkirk Wheel
If you happen to visit Scotland and the Falkirk area, a visit to the Falkirk Wheel is a must. The wheel a 21st century sculpture, engineering marvel and icon of Scotland was officially opened by the Queen in May 2002. The World’s first revolving boat lift transports boats from and to the Forth of Clyde and Union Canals.
This was previously accomplished by traversing an 11 lock staircase to overcome the 35 meter height difference. The Falkirk Wheel was the last link in Britain’s canal restoration program and operation of a corridor of commercial opportunity stretching coast to coast across Scotland’s central belt.
The refurbished canals are now in full flow after nearly half a century of neglect and abuse.
