The Village of Dunure

The village of Dunure with its forbidding castle ruins was once a major fishing port. Now a sleepy seaside village, it was once active in what was known as the ‘Arran water’ trade, whiskey smuggling. The entire coastline of South Ayrshire from Ballantae to Prestwick was actively engaged in this illicit industry.

It’s worth the short walk up to the castle to see the magnificent view of a large stretch of the Ayrshire Coast. There’s a wee pub, tearoom and gift shop next to the harbor which is worth visiting.
